My name is Karissa (Fehler) McCallum. After the recent birth of my daughter, and taking on the role of a mother, I know that I have a special interest in womenʼs health, including connecting women with one another, pediatrics, balancing the emotions and utilizing food as medicine. (I love that I can explain how certain dietary and lifestyle choices impact health, and how certain foods can be used for prevention of disease.)
I am an NCCAOM board certified acupuncturist and herbologist, who graduated from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine- Chicago. There I took eleven semesters of classes and completed fifteen clinic shifts over the course of approximately four years.Outside of the classroom, where I feel some of the most important learning takes place, I went to Pacific College of Oriental Medicineʼs Symposium in 2010 and 2011 in San Diego, CA.
There I attended special lectures on Chi Nei Tsang (internal massage of the organs), acupuncture for weight loss, facial diagnosis, abdominal diagnosis and treatment, food as therapy, immunology for children and more.
I spent a year assisting Marie-France Collin, known for her use of accessory techniques (cupping, moxa and gua sha) and channel pathway treatments. I also studied with Dr. Lixin Sha, who received her training in China. Dr. Sha offers years of experience with womenʼs health, pain management and more. Prior to graduating, I spent a month in China attending lectures on the treatment of sports injuries, eye disorders, nourishing life principles and herbal processing. Additionally, I observed inpatient rotations in the neurology, urology, gastroenterology, respiratory, rheumatology and obstetrics and gynecology departments.
I first came to East Asian Medicine with interests in Western medicine, psychology, nutrition and education as well as a bachelors degree from Northwestern University. At Northwestern I majored in Human Development and Psychological Services. Outside of school I have over ten years of experience working with children, and I possess a certification to teach yoga classes. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my husband, daughter, friends, family and two dogs. I am an avid cook, baker, reader and writer. I enjoy yoga, working out, scrapbooking, and being crafty.
